Writing Samples

Today in Creative Writing class, the topic was: “Your Mind as a City.”
We had just 20 minutes to write—and this is what I came up with.
I hope you enjoy this quick trip through the city of my mind!

Welcome to the city of Jessica’s Mind

By Jessica Diamond

All aboard, the conductor announces as the Mag Lav train heads into the city of Jessica’s mind. First stop is downtown. On the left is the skyscraper of Jessica’s memories. It’s the tallest building in the city. Millions of thoughts per day arrive there using the subway of thought. It’s also the largest hub in the city. Many beautiful Art Deco skyscrapers surround the skyscraper of memories as it’s the oldest part of the city. It’s hustle and bustle today as Jessica’s thoughts arrive in waves using the subway of thought. She is always thinking about writing, creating, music, and art. Each thought is sent to the floor of the appropriate skyscraper thus cataloging more of Jessica’s thoughts.

In midtown is the library of Jessica’s emotions. It constantly catches on fire when she is overwhelmed. The fireman keep busy putting out that fire, but they are getting faster and more efficient with each fire they extinguish. Designed in memory of her favorite architect Frank Lloyd Wright, its prairie-style design makes it the most elegant building in the city. Also, located in the same area is the grief park with a monument to her beloved pet Oreo and her deceased spouse Jeane. The river of tears flows through it, making it a truly sacred experience.

Next to midtown is the zoo filled with the most exotic animals of Jessica’s thoughts. From Penguins that speak English to Guinea Pigs that speak French it’s a one-of-a-kind experience. Another favorite animal of Jessica is bears, so there is a huge bear canyon and they all like the Chicago Bears football team. The zoo is hilly and can become an exhausting place both mentally and physically. Taking in all the animals and their languages can be overwhelming. The gift shop is a must see as well from Hello Kitty penguins to a Guinea Pig that can respond to you this gift shop has it all. Bring your Visa – it’s where you want to be!

Crime has been eradicated so there are no bad parts of the city, but some areas are better than others. The best part is Millard with the P street mansions, where Jessica lives. It’s the final stop for the subway of thought. This way Jessica can get downtown fast and avoid traffic and road construction. P street mansions is the most elegant part of the city that has homes with elevators and custom doll rooms for Jessica to spend time with her dolls.

Because the city is built on a hill the P street mansions neighborhood overlooks the entire city with stunning views from the deck. The weather is always amazing year-round. It’s around 70 degrees and only occasional mountain showers. No need for a raincoat so bring your Monster High tee shirt and shorts and stay for a while!

Just wrote this for my upcoming album “Attack of the Killer Martians”!
It’s definitely a little out there—but hey, so is the album. Take a look… and get ready for a wild sonic ride through space, chaos, and laser battles.

It’s a cold day on Mars as thousands of little green men dance and throw a wild interplanetary party when they decide to take over Earth. It’s a wild Martian celebration with dance contests and laser shooting for target practice. They begin mapping out their plan of attack. Their goal: invade the mainland U.S. and take over the world. But they still need to choose a city. They finally decide on New York City—packed with people and loaded with mainframe communication systems. The decision has been made. It’s time to execute the plan!

Next comes the journey through space. As they fly toward Earth, they put on some tunes and rock out in the ship. The music is eerie, filled with heavy drums. They have little conversations as they drift through the galaxy, while sending signals to New York City to knock out communication devices. Mission Man is on high alert and intercepts the Martian signals. One thing they didn’t count on was Mission Man’s ability to detect alien signals and bounce them off the moon—which, incidentally, is how the craters really got there.

Mission Man sends out an emergency broadcast that he has intercepted Martian signals and urges the world to take cover. As citizens begin to shelter, the ships descend into New York City and prepare for takeover. The descent seems to last forever as they hover over the skyscrapers, casting shadows and making the sky as dark as night. They’ve positioned themselves just right to block the sun with their massive fleet of ships.

Mission Man begins preparing for battle. He suits up in full battle gear, ready to take on the alien ships and defeat the Martians. An entire fleet of F-16s is deployed, ready to fight to the death. Jets stream in from across the Mountain States and the East Coast. The sky is louder than it’s ever been, filled with the roar of thousands of F-16s in flight. Pilots are jamming out to their favorite tracks as they soar into New York City.

Finally, as the F-16s approach, the Martians begin firing lasers, destroying buildings. People run and scream as the Martians broadcast their demands over loudspeakers. Then they begin rounding up citizens, pulling them into ships for testing. The testing is horrific, and screams echo from within the alien crafts. Chaos erupts everywhere as battles begin. People flee into subway tunnels, desperate for safety.

The first battle is brutal. We begin to lose to the Martians. We can’t let them win. Mission Man has an idea he thinks might work: if all the jets fire at once, they could create an EMP strong enough to knock out the Martian communication systems and possibly shut their ships down. He gives the order. We start to regain control—until the Martians unleash sonic lasers and wipe out half the fleet. Then, the turnaround begins. We create sonic booms by flying faster than the speed of sound over the Martian ships. They begin to wobble and lose stability. Several crash—then several more. Mission Man keeps directing jets to repeat the maneuver. More ships lose control and slam into the ground.

Next comes the second battle. The surviving Martians emerge from the wreckage and begin firing their lasers. It’s an all-out war—pure chaos. But this time, we’re winning. The Martians start to retreat, and we shoot down those who don’t. Smoke fills the air, thick with the stench of burning ships and buildings. The head Martian steps forward and offers to leave if we stand down. As more Martians flee, citizens begin to celebrate their hard-fought victory—even as the city lies in ruins. People dance in the rubble to wild techno music. We may have won, but the cost was high. We must rebuild.

Then Mission Man notices movement in one of the downed ships. It’s another battle! People scream and rush back into the subway tunnels as air raid sirens blare. Mission Man orders another round of sonic booms. One by one, the surviving ships begin to shake and crash. He calls the all-clear and signals for people to emerge. The war is finally over, and this time, the people can truly celebrate.

One by one, humans begin dismantling the alien ships. Tanks roll into the city to crush the remains. Bulldozers follow, scooping up debris to be sent to labs for analysis.

The battles are over. The war has been won. They’re gone forever—or are they?

Listen to this sonic journey as it captures the chaos, thrill, and otherworldly energy of killer Martians descending on Earth—blending sci-fi soundscapes, glitchy beats, and cinematic tension into an immersive alien experience.

Below are samples from a writing class that I take. I have about 20 minutes to write each story

The Geneie

Walking the beach, and what do I stumble on? A bottle. Instantly I think of that song by the Police “Message in a bottle” I open it and what do my eyes behold? A treasure map. I’m like no way, its 2025 not the 1600’s. My mind begins to think –  what is this the Goonies? I don’t want to be chased while on some wild goose chase, but my mind gets the best of me and I’m like hey why not? What do I have to lose? I’m off for the weekend, and maybe if I find riches I can finally tell my boss to shove it.

So I start out 10 paces to the left, whoops I have to remind myself the other left. Ok now were on course and before I know it I spot a cave and I’m like naw this can’t be real. When am I going to wake up? But I follow the directions and go into the cave and look around. It’s dark and creepy and I’m like where are the lights? It’s a good thing I have a phone with a light on it. I tell Siri to turn on the flashlight so I can get a look around. Then I see it, an old lamp laying sideways on the ground and I’m like no way. Really an old lamp? What is there a Geneie inside? I could only wish – if it’s true I can get three wishes and I will want them all.

So I blow the dust off the lamp and give it a rub and believe it or not a Genie pops out. He’s like girl thanks I’ve been in here for over 1000 years and I really gotta pee. I’m like no way this can’t be real. This is what gets people sent to the state hospital, but I’m like what the heck? So I ask – do I get a wish? He’s like actually you get 3 of them just like the movies. Really? 3 wishes?

So I start with my first wish – to have enough money for a lifetime so I can quit my job and he’s like wish granted, check your account online and tell me that’s not enough. I’m like ok and sure enough it’s there. I send the I quit text to my boss and think carefully about the next 2 wishes. What does my little heart desire? A princess castle? Dolls? Toys? A new car? So many choices. I can’t decide and finally I come up with the 2nd wish, a huge room filled with dolls and doll houses for me to enjoy.

Finally I go for it. I’m like I’ve always wanted a Corvette, and I’m going to ask for it. So I tell the Genie I want a Purple Corvette Convertible with black interior and pink trim. He’s like gurl you want a lot, but wish granted – check outside the cave. Sure enough it’s there. I’m like no way Constance and I are going to have a sweet ride home.

What’s that sound? It’s going ding, ding, ding – then I realize it’s Alexa with my 6 AM wakeup alarm. What? It was only a dream. I go and get ready for another day at work – hoping I didn’t really send the I quit text…

What does the script of my life look like?

I woke up again and thought I had the freedom of choice to live my life and then I noticed something under my pillow. I feel around and I am like what is this. It’s a binder that said Jessica’s life. I open it with trembling hands wondering what is in store for me. I see that my life is scripted out from birth to death. I read it and think there is no way, but up until today it’s 100% accurate. Have I really been living out a script instead of leading my own life? So, all the trauma I faced as a child was scripted? Really? That bothers me quite a bit.

Then I ask myself the $64,000 question, do I want to know the future? What happens if I just throw it in the fireplace and burn it? I don’t want to live off a script. I want my life to be my choice and what I want. After a long think I decided to read it, and I don’t like it at all. Am I really supposed to be jobless, broke, homeless and hungry? I know my company failed but really do I need to be tortured too.

I sit and contemplate this situation, what can I do? I don’t want my life to turn out this way. I want to have another company and be a consultant again and do creative writing, songwriting and photography. So, what can I do? I look at everything from the past again and decide that enough is enough and I am going to fix this. So, I hatch a plan, I use my scanner and scan the entire book into my computer. I am like you got this, let’s rewrite the script.

After hours of scanning and uploading, I have it on my computer. I then use my software and go into edit mode and start rewriting the script. I decide what I want my life to look like. I want to be a consultant, songwriter, and photographer so I started making my edits. After I lose the job, I still go to the hospital and Community Alliance to get help. Then that’s where the script does a 180 and life changes. I realize the past is in the past, but I am going to fix the future.

I then start making the changes. I delete losing the house to refinancing the house so I can stay. I change jobless to starting another company and doing what I like. For my music, I really redo the script and become a famous songwriter. Everyone will know Jessica Zigmantas / Jessica Diamond as songwriter extraordinaire. I go ahead and add writing my autobiography and it hits the New York Times Bestseller list. Known for its positivity and making like changes inspires people.

A couple breaks up at a train station:

Frank a well-known author and successful book writer and his girlfriend Margo leave their home in a rich Chicago neighborhood and head to Union Sation. Frank has a book deal in New York City for 6 months and Margo is Jealous. She doesn’t want him to go. She’s afraid he will forget about her while living in his fancy digs in Manhattan. She mumbles something under her breath while driving. Frank asks, “what’s wrong dear?” she said “nothing”. He just let it go. Nothing was going to ruin this for him. He always had his sights on living in Manhattan and now he gets to do it rent -free while he writes his new book.

They arrive after what seemed like eternity and Margo says “Frank I’m worried about you. The city is dangerous and there are a lot of creepy people in New Your City.” Fank says “Honey its only 6 months and I’ll be in Manhattan” she sighs as they unload the car and gather up Frank’s suitcases, backpacks, and other supplies. They walk inside and Frank confirms his reservation and that the train is on time. They sit down and the argument begins. “Frank, I can’t let you go,” said Margo. Fank’s response is that it’s too late and he is going, and she is not going to take this away from him.

Margo started crying on the bench. “Great” Frank thought, I finally get to live out my dream and someone is trying to take it away from me. He said “Margo, I will be just fine, and this will be a real career builder for me as well as some time to play” “Play” Margo said “What exactly are you going to play with – other women? I know there are all kinds of strip bars and sex clubs there” “Whoa” Frank said “Let not be too hasty here. You know you are the only one for me and I don’t want anyone else. You know I’m a sports fanatic and will probably hit a few games” “That’s it” Margo said “You always have to have your way. You always get what you want, and you will get it in New York City. ‘I’ve had enough”

“Oh yeah” Replied Frank. “Had enough of what” “You” Replied Margo. “I know your favorite movie is Risky Business and you want to make love on a train like in the movie. I can see it now, you and some bimbo on coke doing it on the A train.” “Really” Frank replied. “Maybe I should just do it since you accused me of it. Margo the judge, jury, and executioner.” “Well, you did bang your secretary in Sears Tower years ago, shouldn’t I be worried” Replied Margo.

Frank said “Really, we’re on that again it was like 10 years ago and I was drunk, and we were fighting”. At that moment a surge of emotions erupted in Margo. She was angry. She was hurt. Most of all she was scared. She then got up and slapped Frank across the face and said, “Screw anyone you want, you’re a free man now” and stormed out of the train station.

“Lake shore service to New Your City now boarding on track 3 came over the announcements. With a heavy heart and his tail between his legs he walked slowly to track number 3 to board the train to New York City. There were a lot of tears and a lot of beers on that trip, but Frank perked up when he got to New York City to write his new book.
